Considering the big way free MMOs get you to pay is by inconveniencing you I tend to find just paying a sub and getting more or less everything to be a better overall experience. Your mileage may vary of course, but in the end even the free MMOs don't tend to be free if you want a genuinely enjoyable experience with them. I've played more or less every free MMO out there trying to find something to really sink my teeth into and have basically come to the conclusion that you just aren't going to get real quality unless you eventually pick up a paid MMO.
It isn't strictly free, but I would recommend the free trial for FF14 to see if you like the game.
